The Prison Ministries division of the Nehemiah Bible Institute (NBI) aims to provide South African prisoners with opportunities to meet God and grow spiritually. We have been running impactful projects since 1980, but we need more help to reach our exciting new goals and empower even more prisoners.
Together we can build bridges
Prisons have the potential to be a life-altering and life-forming experience for prisoners. NBI has the vision to help South African prisons in realising this potential.
Through our Prison Ministries programmes we want to build bridges for prisoners
- to connect them to their full potential.
- to bridge the gap between prisoner and community.
- to narrow the space between prisoners and their families.
- to draw prisoners closer to God.
Your contribution can help us to build these bridges.
How can you help?
NBI and Bible Media invite you to join hands with us in these challenging times. Your contribution will impact the lives of prisoners long after their prison sentence has been completed.
With your support NBI can enable and strengthen God’s work in prisons across South Africa. We will be able to increase our support for prisoners in various ways and equip prisons to empower prisoners to learn and to grow.
Here are four ways to join us in building bridges by sponsoring Bible Building Blocks:
- Sponsor the biblical training of a prisoner
[1 building block per month – R50]
- Sponsor the printing costs of Bible-based training material
[2 building blocks per month – R100]
- Contribute towards the translation of Bible-based material

Our latest and very exciting fundraising project, in collaboration with prison authorities, is called Art-In-The-Prison. We are asking prisoners to make an artwork of a Bible character that had a positive impact on their lives. From all the entries, the best artworks will be selected and auctioned online. The funds we raise will be used for the development of Prison Ministry programmes. One prisoner per prison will be awarded a prize. The prison where the overall winner is will also receive spiritual and self-help books for their library.
Here is one testimony of a prisoner explaining how he, by completing one of NBI’s Prison Ministries programmes, discovered that a prison can be a place of learning, not only a place of punishment. NBI has the dream of making this statement true for many prisoners. They need our support now more than ever.
Prison Ministries background
Through the years NBI has taken hands with prisons across South Africa to uplift prisoners in various ways. Our Prison Ministries programmes currently reach 96% of South African prisons, that is, 235 of the 243 prisons and about 170 000 prisoners.
NBI offers prisoners 20 different Bible ministry courses, available in eight different languages. Our pastoral advisors can support prisoners with their learning in their mother tongue. NBI sends 10 000 books to different prisons annually. We also support the prisons in the Christmas season with a yearly Christmas card project, where cards and postage stamps are donated so that prisoners can send these cards to their loved ones.
NBI’s Prison Ministries is extremely grateful for our faithful supporters, including organisations such as Bible Media from Wellington, Athletes for Christ from Stellenbosch and Biker’s Church from Brackenfell.
For your donation, an 18A tax certificate is available on request.
